Keeping cool in Orlando

When the temperatures are high, Orlando’s  splash pads are a great way to stay cool. These places are not to be confused with Orlando’s full scale water parks, but for local families and visitors looking for a splash park experience, here are a few of the choices in town:

Dr. P. Phillips Community Park: For families living south of downtown Orlando, the Dr. Phillips Park is $1 per person during the summer. The Dr. Phillips neighborhood is also home to someone the nicest restaurants in town, such as Seasons 52, Timpanos and Bonefish Grill.

Shady Park:
Shady Park is in Winter Park, just a few miles north of downtown Orlando. The park has a couple of picnic tables and a splash fountain for the kids. The upscale shopping boutiques and bistros of Park Avenue are just a few blocks away.

Downey Park: (Pictured) Located at Colonial Drive (State Road 50) and Dean Road on the east side of Orlando, Downey Park’s splash pad is $1 per person during the summer. This location is closest to the University of Central Florida.

Gatorland: This is the only splash pad on the list where visitors would have pay admission to visit, but Gator Gully Splash is one of the newer features of an Old Florida favorite.

Even though these splash pads don’t involve full immersion, be prepared with towels, dry clothes and sunscreen. Most of all, be prepared to stay cool during the dog days of summer.
