A Rare Debut: SeaWorld Orlando Introduces Juvenile Sawfish to the Public

In celebration of International Sawfish Day, SeaWorld Orlando is giving guests an unforgettable glimpse into marine conservation in action. For the first time in the park’s history, a juvenile smalltooth sawfish, born onsite in 2023, has officially entered a guest-facing exhibit — marking a monumental moment in endangered species preservation.

Meet Axel, the young sawfish now thriving in the Manta Aquarium, where his debut isn’t just a first for SeaWorld — it’s a symbol of hope for one of the ocean’s most elusive and endangered species.

A Conservation Breakthrough

The birth of Axel and his two siblings in July 2023 was a rare feat in the aquarium world. SeaWorld Orlando is not only the only U.S. facility caring for smalltooth sawfish, but also just the second in the world to successfully welcome pups under human care.

These young sawfish have already grown to three times their birth length, offering researchers invaluable insights into the species’ early development. Now, with Axel’s move into a public exhibit, SeaWorld guests are offered an unprecedented view into an ongoing conservation success story.

“This moment is the culmination of years of collaboration, dedication, and discovery,” said Dr. Dana Lindemann, Veterinarian at SeaWorld Orlando. “By bringing this young sawfish into view, we can inspire future generations, while continuing to advance critical research and contribute to the recovery of this species.”

Why It Matters: The Fight to Save Sawfish

Smalltooth sawfish were once abundant in U.S. waters but faced dramatic population declines due to habitat loss and accidental capture. In 2003, they became the first marine fish listed under the U.S. Endangered Species Act, and today, their presence is mostly limited to Florida’s coastal waters.

SeaWorld Orlando has been caring for adult sawfish for over 30 years, including Axel’s parents. As a proud participant in the AZA Species Survival Plan, the park works closely with partner institutions to study and protect these incredible animals.

Axel’s presence in the Manta Aquarium isn’t just an exhibit addition — it’s a living connection between the public and a critically endangered species many will never encounter in the wild.

The Importance of International Sawfish Day

Observed annually on October 17, International Sawfish Day aims to raise global awareness for the five sawfish species, all of which are currently endangered or critically endangered.

This year, SeaWorld Orlando’s celebration comes with a visible reminder of progress — a juvenile sawfish now swimming in full view of visitors. It’s a chance for families, students, and ocean lovers to witness conservation in motion and reflect on how their actions and awareness can make a difference.

A Bright Future for a Rare Species

Axel’s debut is more than just a zoological milestone — it’s a celebration of science, stewardship, and the enduring mission of SeaWorld to protect what lies beneath the surface. As SeaWorld continues to push the boundaries of marine care and education, guests are invited not only to enjoy the magic of the sea but to be part of its preservation.

Next time you visit SeaWorld Orlando, stop by the Manta Aquarium and say hello to Axel — a small sawfish making a big impact.
